Christmas and the rest of the Holidays

Hey there, hope everyone is enjoying the holidays so far. It's been a busy month and I'm really going to regret enjoying it, as I have a major dissertation that I have to write up which, I have to hand in more or less first week back to uni. But, hey, I'll somehow manage to get it done (fingers crossed).

So other than panicking on my dissertation, I tried to ease my mind on doing something creative and at least expand my knowledge on some 3D work. I then decided to go back to doing some Cinema 4D work and found this really refreshing.

So, thanks to watching a few tutorials, I was able to make this Christmas card.

Christmas in a few days!

Pretty neat, as I enjoyed the modelling side. It feels more complex to how I would model in Maya, but at the same time, really interesting to learn. I would like to learn more about Cinema 4D to be honest, as i really like the kind of work which is made used from it. But, it feels more of a hobby rather than something I would like to make a carreer of. But you never know, I may change my mind about that.

I also made the following image below, which I'm really quite pleased with. This was kind of accidental as I had been following a tutorial at the time. Soon, one thing led to another and I was able to make this.

The Beast

Before the holidays has finished and I'm back at university to start on my final project, I would like to work on a few more tests on my character animation, particularly the lip sync area. This has really bugged me from the previous animations which i had produced, as now and again, the animation would appear out of sync.

So, I hope everyone will enjoy the rest of holidays and I'll see you next time

Destiny Animation Part 3 Final

After more or less none stop working around the clock, I had got to a stage where I was happy enough to render out my animation. Below you'll find the final animation.

I was content with what I had achieved, and noticed a real value when you focus on the character performance first, rather than on the lip sync. But, as much as I'm "content" with this animation, I've noticed a few moments in the animation where it seemed a-bit off. This is probably due to Maya, where I had just relied on it, to re-align the key frames from 24fps to 30fps automatically. Never a good idea.

I had shown this animation to my peers and they also suggested some improvements for my animation as I could've have made the body movements a-lot more simpler, rather than this all over the place the character was in. I then did a stepped animation in Maya where you can view below.

The only problem which kept coming up for me, was animating the slamming part of the audio. It was something which I couldn't really figure out how to solve. I then decided to leave this, as I was running out of time.
Overall, I've really enjoyed this project and hope to continue practicing my skills as an animator.

Destiny Animation Part 2

Hey there. So, after doing some video references for my animation, I then moved onto figuring out my key poses. I then looked at my video references and scanned through. This is a worflow of mine which I had been doing for the past animations.

I however, also then decided to take on board what an animator has suggested. He would draw out some of the poses from his live reference, where he could then later visually see his key poses, based off his drawings. I had then done this and have found it to be really effective and useful.

Blocked out pose

After finding out my key poses, I then decided to start animating in Maya and begin blocking out my key poses. This took a while, as now and again I would change the poses a-bit, as I thought it didn't look right.

I continued animating and then got to a stage where I needed to take a step back from my work and, ask from other people on what they thought of it so far. This is definitely recommended, as you could sometimes be missing something and not realise before it's too late.

I got my feedback from my classmates whom were very constructive with what they had said. So, there was no time to waste, and I just carried on animating.

When I neared to the end of my animation, I then rendered my scene. But, I had encountered a very big problem with my animation at this point. I had not realised this, that the audio, was running 30fps rather than 24fps, which I was animating on. I had at the time lost 3-4 seconds worth of animation. Luckily, Maya was quite forgiving and when I put the time-frame to 30fps, it kind of automatically placed my key-frames in their correct place, without me having to do anything.

Disaster Adverted

More work are going to be posted within a few minutes.

AndyCodex Animation

Destiny Animation Part 1

Hey there, for my next animation I'm going to try and focus more on character performance, as the past two animations which i had done, wasn't exactly strong enough in terms with poses. Unlike the past two animations as well, I decided not to have entered the past 11 second competition from November. I could therefore focus, on one character rather, than two characters.

I had then chosen an audio from the series "Lost" spoken by the character "Locke". I personally chose this, as at the time I was feeling a-bit down with the animation feedback which I had receieved. So, I then went with something a-bit more dramatic and something more motivational.

I then just went with the usual process, where I analysed the audio over and over again. I then acted this out with the audio as well as a version, where I just read from the lines.

You can see the difference between, the two videos, where the one which I say the lines to, seems to have a much more emotional feeling. The reason for this was because, I had been reading the book called "The Intent to Live" by "Larry Moss", on which I had applied the exercises from his book, into my acting.

Though I was quite happy with what I had acted out, I still felt something was a-bit off. I then re-acted the scene over again, until I was happy with what I had got.

I'll be posting what I did next in a few minutes.

Showreel and Update

Well, there has been some radical changes to this blog as I feel I'd no longer, want to show past work from my 1st and 2nd year of university. That's really the major change. I've now set up a new domain website, which I'll post after I've submitted my work, in a few weeks time.

Anyway, I've made a really quick showreel above, but it'll soon be updated after I've completed a few animations, later on. Right now, it's a really good look on where I stand as an animator, and where I need to improve.

I'll be posting some work, on my final animation within a few days time. So keep a look out on this blog.

October 11 Second Club Competition Final

The past couple of weeks, has been quite a draining experience. I was really pleased with what I was then able to achieve, from brainstorming and annotating the audio file given, to the final end product, an animation. Below you'll find the final piece.

I was able to complete a first draft for my animation a few days early and get some initial feedback. However, the problem I then had with this was, I had University lessons conflicting, with what I could potentially have free time, to improve my animation. So a-lot of the points raised when I had asked my classmates and peers, about how to improve my animation, I couldn't add. I then instead tried to re-fine and polish areas with the limited time, as best as possible.

For my next project it'll be for my final animation for my university module, as I only have a month left.  , till my deadline. But, I will still be doing another 11second club competition for November alongside with the upcoming project I have planned, as I believe that this will continue to push my skill as an animator plus, it's a good way to learn and get into practice to working towards deadlines. So I'll see you next time and Happy Halloween.

October 11 Second Competition Part 3

Hey guys, it's been a while. I've just finished my first draft for this month's October competition, where unlike last time, I didn't have enough time to get feedback from people, so I can improve it. Though, there's not really much time to improve, however, I'm in a better position than I was, last month.

What I'm really hoping is that the people which I'll ask for improvements, can give me a fresh perspective on my animation. Therefore say for example, the facial lip sync is a-bit off, or how the character body performance isn't really smooth enough. These comments will really help me improve my final animation, when I'll render in a couple of days time.

It's been a long week but, I loved every second of it. Animating for this competition really felt like I have progressed a-bit more in terms with my, animation skills. I've learnt from my previous animation what to do and don't, and it's really rewarding how this month animation has turned out. Though it's not to say that I haven't nailed it. So, I'll have the final one uploaded soon. Bye.

October 11 Second Competition Part 2

Right, this is just going to be  a quick update, as I don't have the energy to work at the moment. I've been ill throughout this whole week and, it's been really difficult for me to focus on my work. On the bright side, I was able to make a quick test for this current competition. I wanted to try and focus on lip synching the words as i knew this was where I really struggled from the last animation.

So, when you play the video above, you will see my workflow and how I approached the animation. From blocking out the first few key poses and slowly polishing up the animation.

Now, if you compare my previous animation video (below), you can see the dramatic difference from the video posted above. You can see the flexibility of the mouth , and the squash and stretch being applied, whereas the one below, it feels floaty and lifeless.

I really wanted to get the lip sync to match with the animation, as closely as possible. So I really took my time with my planning stage, and when I started animating. One really important thing which I always had in my mind, when I was animating this, was to "not allow the computer to do everything" for me. This really stuck with me, as I didn't want to repeat my mistakes from my last animation. Another similar saying was, "not allow more than 4 frames" for the computer to do.

No more than 4 frames
I'm really pleased with this mini test, as it reassured me that, the things that I was learning was getting through to me. However, that's not to say that my test so far, was perfect. I could definitely see a-lot improvement needed to made. But, I'll get to that when I begin animating for the competition.

October 11 Second Competiton Part 1

Hey guys, I just did some work on the current competition for the 11 second club and so far, it's progressing well. I quickly, made two different characters, using the morpheus rig, though I think I need to think about my character designs, as the two characters I'm using are quite generic.

Confused/ Lost guy

Old Guy
So these are the two characters that I'll be animating until the end of the month. I was really pleased to get back into Maya and start setting up my scene. The only problem which I had was modelling the table and chairs as, it's something I haven't done for a while. Though they were simple designs, I hate the look of them and found them to be quite distracting. the reason for this is because I know I can do better, but, I'm not focusing on the scene objects, instead more on the animation side. So I try to let it go.
Building the sets for the scene

I have a rough idea of the storyboard and the starting positions of my characters, but I'll need to go over this with someone to see if it's alright. Therefore I know I'm getting the right camera angles and so on, for people to watch. I have however, already shot my live reference as well, thanks to a friend who has acted/ mimed with the audio. The videos which I've recorded was perfect, as, if I had acted it out, I knew that i would over exaggerate the scene and make it look unnatural and stiff. So thanks Mike. I'll load some of these up later on.

Scene 1?

I then began, posing out the first pose for each character. This time, I took my time as I knew that this is a crucial stage for any animation, and I had to get the right silhouette so that the audience can get the idea what the character is doing from just a glance.

Work in progress

Is this the right pose?

I stopped my work around here as I have to go somewhere, but before I continue posing out my characters, I'll need to make an animatic and watch some more live references i.e elderly people walking and so on, just to make sure that my animation, feels believable and that I get the timing right. These are still very early stages, so I'll see you guys next time.

October's 11 Second Competition

Right, a quick update to keep you guys in the loop. I'll be entering this month competition again, where hopefully I'll be able to take in all the constructive criticism I had received, from my previous entry. For this particular audio they had provided this time, it'll consist two people talking, rather than the one. This will be a good challenge for me and it'll, really push my skills up.

I don't want to put anything up quite yet so instead, enjoy the video above, which is a really good insight about the history of animation. I will be putting some of my work really soon, it's just with work and being ill, which is really affecting me at the moment. So see you guys soon!

The Truth Hurts

Right this is just a quick review of my 11 second Club animation from September's competition. I have to face it sooner or later. I have looked at my results and seen where my animation has come, and i'ts very bad. I guess I can't really excuse myself saying I didn't have enough time and so on, but to sum it up, my animation was poor.

Constructive Criticism
My animation was rater 2.6 stars out of 10, which means that it's basically poor. That I need to review my animation principles and study a-bit more about life.

Was really Happy when Will gave feedback to me

Now, I guess this is kind of a good thing, as I can look and compare how much I got to learn, before I can really become a better animator. It's good to look at myself and see where I stand and, it's going to be a long road ahead. The fact that I also seen the comments is a great thing, so now I know where to work at, and what my next action plan is rather than, worrying if I'm doing this right or not. Obviously I'm not.

The truth hurts- never give up

So, I'm really going to push myself and aim high as it's not the end of the world. I mean, meeting Cassidy and Ronan at Canterbury over the weekend, really inspired me. I want that dream job, to maybe one day work in a major company like Dreamworks or Pixar and to be part of a team working  what they love doing, with passion. But the most important thing right now, is to improve my character performance and lip sync.

Just really want to thank everyone who commented on my animation, whether positive or negative, this will help me be more determined to get better and improve bit by bit.

Canterbury Anifest 2012

This was an amazing experience, as well as a good trip down to Canterbury. This was a festival which consisted of a range of different animation talks, short films and opportunities for people to get involved in and learn more about the industry.

I found this festival to be the best one which I had attended so far because, a-lot of the previous one I had gone to, didn't have a-lot of 3D animation talks, which is where I want to focus on, particularly character animation. So, it was really good to meet and talk to some of these people.

Volunteers for Anifest
One of them was "Cassidy Curtis" who has been an animator with Dreamworks. He has been involved with blockbuster films like, "Shrek, How to train Your dragon and Madagascar". His talk was really interesting, as he mentions about certain techniques, like the smearing effect from the 2D animation "Bugs Bunny", which really help capture the character action and reaction.

Dreamworks
Cassidy then goes on to talk about his favourite character which he had animated, which was "Toothless" which was also the most difficult to animate as well. Seeing how he approached problems and resolved them was really inspiring. I really loved the sequence which he animated, as the scene didn't involve any talking, but instead was conveyed through the two characters; "Toothless and Hiccup" actions, which we as the audience, understood and emphasised with.
How to train your Dragon: Shot done by Cassidy
I never knew that How to train your Dragon, was based on a book until Cassidy asked the audience, "how many people had read this?". It turns out that, the book was a different story to the feature film. I may have a look into this, as this was one of my favourite CG animated films.

As a volunteer for the festival, I was very lucky enough to have a chat with Cassidy, where I talked about, what he was working on at Dreamworks, the techniques used in films, how I myself could become a better animator and etc. He was really a good guy and I really hope to see him again in my career.

Cassidy Curtis on left and Myself on the right.
I also met "Ronan" (didn't get his last name unfortunately) who did a-lot of the technical side for Pixar, who did the lighting. Though this isn't the route I'm learning for 3D, it was interesting to hear from his experience at Pixar and quite a privilege to meet a person who has worked for Pixar for almost two decades.

Left to right: Jess, Ronan, Myself, Alex and Bottom:Brian
There were other events like Aardman talk, and Double negative, both of which had some fantastic work made from them. Not exactly the route I want to go, though I was really tempted to talk to "Eamonn Butler"- Head of animation for Double negative. The reason why was, I was quite interested in pursuing into VFX animation a few months ago. So I was hoping to at least try to network with him, in case I changed my mind, in the near future. However,  my mind is set to becoming an animator and I really want to give life to characters and for audience to enjoy.

So, I really enjoyed this weekend trip to Canterbury and had met some great people, hopefully i'll be attending many more festivals like this in the near future. On a side note, I'll be posting some preparation work for the October 11 Second competition, in the upcoming week.

September 11 Second Club- Final

I have to say, I'm really chuffed on having completed this animation which I had planned out. I know that may not sound much to you guys but, I never really though I'd be able to animate something like this a few weeks ago. Though clearly, there is much need of improvement, I'm happy with where and how far I have come from.

I know that I could improve this later on and make it look better but, I wanted to put myself in a restrictive deadline as though I can't improve and that, I've only got one shot at this. This way, I could put pressure on myself and try and remember all the skills which I had learnt, and try to apply it to my character. I could definitely now take a step back and look at, where I need to improve.

Another reason why I'm looking at this project from a restrictive deadline is because the deadline for this project is on Sunday, as it's a competition. I therefore won't be able to have anymore time to improve it as I've got work which I can't avoid.

A few things which I need to improve are like, lip syncing, the shape of the mouth for the dialogue, adding subtle animation principles and so on.

I'm not looking to win to be honest, though I may have it as a goal, when I've reached to a certain point with my animation skill. But, right now, I'm mainly looking for feedback and constructive criticism, as well as the animating side. So, I really can't wait to start animating my next project really as, I had fun with this project. See you next time.

September 11 Second Club Project

This is just a quick update on what I'll be working on in a very short period of 2-3 days. So, I had been thinking of doing the September 11 second club competition for quite some time during this month but, because of preparation for uni, I had to postponed it. I was going to decide to give up and continue on another project which I had already started. I then thought that this would be the wrong choice, as whether or not the animation which I'll produce may not be, up to scratch; it'd be good to get some feedback from the community.
Morpheus Rig
This would also give me a chance to review myself on where as an animator, I am at the moment. Like I said from a previous post, " I can't just stop and wonder, what I could've achieved and have pure regret, on the opportunity which I had missed out on'. Plus, I know that the only way to become better is to learn from my mistakes.

I think the hands are too big, but will focus on the animating side instead for now

The images which is posted with this blog, are some of the few blocked out poses which I had begun, for this September competition. I still got a-lot to do but hopefully, I'd would've blocked it all out by tonight and, begin breaking down the animation sequence and begin refining it, as I progress further on.

Blocking out each poses

I only have to the end of September to finish this, which doesn't really give me a chance to improve. However, it's a good test for myself to see how much, I've learned from the Digital tutors and apply theories from various of books I've read, early this September. I also think with this tight deadline, it will really bring out the best of my skills and show where I'm still weak at.

Final Year Begins

Hey there, I'm back to university for my last and final year, ecstatic and worried at the same time (chuckle). Before I return though, we were asked to write up a proposal for which we could negotiate with our tutors. This can be anything, from stop-motion, 2D animation and so on. If you've been following this blog, you've noticed that I've been trying to become a 3D animator and thats exactly, what my proposal will be based on.

For this project of mine, I'm hoping to be able to animate a character with an audio file, where I will try and put it in a situation, which it will try and overcome. At the same time, I really want to make the audience empathise with the character.

My tutor will elaborate further about this project, so what I'm typing up right now, may change but, I doubt it would change significantly with what I have planned out. So, my learning outcomes would be the following:

- to give a believable performance, through inner impulse emotions
- to produce a theatrical short with my character
- to be able to lip-sync my character very fluidly
- to make my audience feel empathy with my character

Over the past summer, I know I've struggled with learning how to animate and I still do; evidently my side project for the 11 second club. Though you can't be successful after a few tutorials as it takes time (years......), I realise where my strengths comes into play when working on an animation.

I can analyse the graph editor which used to look like a mathematician would only understand and remove any dead keyframes that are visible.  I could apply most of the animation principles e.g. secondary action, anticipation to the character. Can't really think anymore with my strengths, as I don't really like saying what I do know, as though I'm boasting so...I'm going to leave it as that.

To ensure that I'm able to hit all of my learning outcomes, I'd need to do several things such as:

- continue reading on animation theories and look at case studies (previous animation)
- do a handful of small tests with audio files
- attend to live performances e.g. theatres so that I can capture real life situations of characters and see their expressions.
- learn more tutorials of how to animate in 3D software
- produce an effective storyboard for extreme poses for the character as well as live reference

Going to be interesting

Well, I guess thats it. I've been under the radar this whole month more or less, as I ran into a few problems, when I started animating myself for the 11 second club, for this current month. I then, knew that something was wrong with it, so I decided to focus on reading the books which I've purchased during the summer and it's definitely paid off, as it had helped me type this proposal up as well as planning on future animations. So, I'll see you next time!

Facial Animation

Well, I didn't get through as much tutorials as I would've have liked this summer but, I feel as though the ones I did really helped me to understand a-lot more about how to animate in 3D, in this case Maya. So, I decided to follow another facial animation tutorial, as the last one I did one, was quite a while ago, so I needed to do another, to refresh my memory. Plus this one was a-bit more complex, but shorter.

The tutorial I believe was a-lot shorter but, that didn't really matter when I was learning from this, as I kind of knew what to do, and how to refine each poses by looking at the graph editor. It was really encouraging when I just paused the video and just tried to sort out the problems myself, as my animation wasn't exactly the same as the one Digital tutors had produced.

There were times however which I felt unsure though, such as when the character shakes her head, or how to give a better arc when the head is turning. Resolving these problems took a-while, where trial and error was used over and over again.

Well, this was the last tutorial which I'm going to learn from Digital Tutors for a-while. The real challenge is to now try and animate myself. So, hopefully, I'll be posting them soon in the following week. With these tests, I'll be ready for my final year at Uni! (I Hope)

Lifting Heavy Objects Final

I know that this is a little late, but I was able to finish off the animation, which I had started a few days ago. The rendering process is taking a while, even as I type this, I have another set of render to be done. Anyway here it is (below)

As mentioned from a previous blog post, I had said that " this was a really challenging animation", I cannot emphasise this anymore. Though I may've been following the Digital Tutors tutorial, I've noticed, that when I was animating, certain parts were different to the one they had, compared to the one I was working on. This has therefore, left me confused and frustrated when I was trying to follow the tutorial video.

I then had to try and make the most what I had already blocked out and animated. So at times, I had to watch a video a couple of times and carefully switch back to my work, where I had to see whether or not if my seemed similar to the Digital tutors version. This then lead, my animation to look strange and sometime the movement of the character to be quite rigid. A-lot of work had to be done, by using the graph editor.

But, you know this was indeed a good experience and I've learnt quite a-lot compared to previous videos. For example, I understand why and when to add a follow through, or add an arc at certain points for the animation. I also realise that I need to learn more about "timing and spacing"where this is evident when the character celebrates.

So, though this may've took a while to animate, I feel a-bit more confident to when it'll come to animating by myself next week.

Lifting Heavy Objects Animation Part 1

I'm a bit off track this week as I've been a-bit ill, haven't really been able to fully recover and it's really having an affect on my concentration. Even as I'm typing this up, I just want to get some sleep. So, as you may've guessed from the blog title, this is an incomplete animation which I have been learning.

The video above is what I've been able to do so far, and before you say that the legs are missing, it's because I've turned them off. It's defiantly a good way to animate, as your not distracted by too many nurb curves.

Unlike the facial and walk cycle that I had done so far, this animation involved a character interacting with another object. This has therefore been really challenging, even at the early blocking stages for the extreme poses. I got frustrated and annoyed at some points, as my animation would not be the same as the Digital tutors guide. Though thankfully, I can see what was wrong by using the graph editor, and resolved most of the problems.

I can only hope by Sunday that, I would have fully recovered and been able to finish this animation.  The reason being is the fact that I'm running out of time and Uni is next month. So I need to have learnt as much as possible so I could begin animating by myself and truly begin to learn. So I'll be posting part 2 on Sunday.

Walk Cycle

Well hello there again, I've finally got something done! This particular animation took me a while to do as part of the Digital tutor tutorial, was difficult for me to grasp and I had to keep re-doing the animation over and over again. Though this was near the start of animating, when I was blocking out this character. So it wasn't too bad.

I've learnt quite a hefty amount of useful tips during this tutorial, for example, mirroring the values of "xyz" from translate or rotation, which really sped up the animating part. Plus, I feel as though I'm more confident in solving problems with the animation by looking at the graph editor.

But, there were times where i would try to watch a video as fast as I could, rather than taking it all in, and realise why the narrator has done that in a particular way; as I really wanted to just complete this whole tutorial.

So, in future, really, I should take my time and try to go through the video again, just to make sure i really understand what is going on. Anyway, I'll be posting more stuff soon, so keep an eye out on this blog.

Key Principles Animation

Well hello, it's been a while since i've done a blog post. I was meaning to post a few things, but I decided to wait until I had a reasonable amount of work to talk about. Anyway, from my previous blog post, I had just learnt how to animate a talking character with an audio file. Hungry for more knowledge, I decided to purchase a month worth tutorial from Digital Tutors. As many of the videos they have available, are the ones which I'm really keen to learn and brush up my skills.

Digital Tutors provided the scenes

So I then listed and planned out what I was going to learn and once that was done, I started without hesitation. The most important topic which I needed to learn was the 12 principles, which I found really refreshing to learn, from a 3D perspective.

They were some parts which I thought kind of dragged on, with the tutorials which I had planned out, but I think it was because I wanted to animate something and learn at the same time, rather than learn some tips and tricks on how to improve my animation workflow. Never the less, I found this really useful.

I'm a bit behind at the moment with the tutorials I had planned, due to work, and I had hoped by next week, I would start animating by myself and really start learning and applying the knowledge that I had taken from Digital tutors. But, I'm estimating that by the 19th of August I will start doing that. So keep an eye out with the work which I will be posting on this blog.

Lip Sync Animation

I really have to thank "Digital Tutors" as they have provided a very well structured tutorial, where it' was very easy to follow and to understand. Though I have to be honest, there were some points in the tutorial where I did question "why do it, in that particular way?". This was the case when the tutorial progressed further on.

So, at some points I would mainly be copying what the tutor was saying, for example, applying subtle movements for the in-betweens e.g. when the head is turning. Or even when the eyebrow needed to go up and down. But overall, I've learnt a-lot from this tutorial, especially the graph editor.

This tutorial has also made me realised how much more theories, I need to read up on, as a-lot of what the tutor had mentioned, were from the books that I had purchased this summer. (Read previous blog posts).

I must add on, that I have really enjoyed animating this short excersise, and it has made me realised that I'd prefer to animate, rather than to model, texture and etc a character and so on. I will therefore focus a-lot more animation tutorials and will be testing out theories from the books that I have at my disposal.

Facial and Lip Sync Animation

Well, hello, it's been a while indeed. I haven't got much to show, but I guess it's better than nothing. I've finally got back into the mood to improving my skills and have been learning quite a-bit from Digital tutors. Though the progress maybe slow, I will hopefully have completed most of the animation tutorials which I have.

The animation below is something I've been working over the past day, though I should've done much more. I'm quite happy with it and cannot wait to start lip syncing with sounds.

These past few weeks has really made me think that I should have a goal, other than learning just a bunch of animation skills. So, by August (fingers crossed) I will have learnt enough that, I can begin animating without the help of any tutorials. These will be a series of shorts, where I will focus on some animation principles and lip synicng. Therefore improving my showreel. See you next time.
